Working within what was then the Soviet Union, Paradjanov developed a
unique cinematic language in which costume, carpets, visual effects
and historical locations form surreal tableaux, best displayed in his
masterpiece, The Colour Of Pomegranates, a hymn to a lost Armenia. His
other films treat Georgian, Ukrainian and Azeri plastic arts, folk
stories and landscapes in a similar way, more akin to painting than to
narrative / plot structured film-making. His work is ultimately
satisfying, although possibly obscure and pretentious to some
viewers for this reason.
