Latcho Drom
Originally released: 1993
Latcho Drom means Safe Journey; the journey in question is that of Gypsies and Gypsy music from Rajasthan in India to Spain via Egypt, Turkey, Rumania, Hungary, Slovakia and France. Not quite a documentary, as there is a rudimentary storyline attached to each stop on the journey, mostly concerning repression, but this is very much secondary to the music and dance, which are on the whole well-chosen and performed. Despite having no narration, we learn about the travails of Gypsy life as we travel westwards. Not a film to everyone's taste, for sure, but certainly worth watching for anyone with an interest in music or gypsy migrations.
