Set in a Gypsy community in Romania, this drama gives a more sober
account of Gypsy life than the frantic films of Emir Kusturica.
Stéphane, a Frenchman, arrives searching for Gypsy music, and
eventually finds romance and friendship. Through his eyes, we come to
understand a little of life in a Rom village, with its constant
overtones of repression, its joys, humour and music. Gatlif, himself
of Gypsy blood, paces the film well, and his sympathetic treatment
makes something genuinely touching from what could otherwise have
been a melodrama.
