Stalker
Originally released: 1979
The Stalker leads a writer and a scientist through "The Zone", an uninhabited post-industrial wasteland, as they try to get to "the Room" where all their desires will be fulfilled. Stunning close-focus camera work brings out a kind of weird beauty from the grime, but the motivations of all three become murkier as they near their goal. An excellent if somewhat bleak and overlong exploration of belief and the desire for psychological self-analysis, with the Stalker as a shamanic guide through the minefields and dangers lurking within the mind.
