Kate Winslet
Born: 1975
Kate Winslet is the mistress of the unexpected. Most other actresses would have let the shock success of Titanic shape the rest of their careers. But Rose (Titanic) is an atypical Winslet creation; for all her bosomy, ringleted looks, she is at her best playing grrls who don't shave their armpits (Hideous Kinky), or their legs (Holy Smoke). She burst, untrained and unrestrained, onto screen in Heavenly Creatures, and her characters are notable for their psychological and sexual intensity, which explains why directors like Jane Campion adore her. Long may she smash expectations – at the box office and onscreen.
