Distinguished Danish stage actor who was appearing on film by 1910,
when he acted in a version of The Portrait Of Dorian Gray. Malberg's
theatrical experience and stern bearing made him ideal for the lead
role in Denmark's first sound film, George Schneevoigt's The Vicar Of
Vejlby (1932). His performance now seems somewhat hammy, but in the
same year he acted on stage in Ordet, which Kaj Munk wrote for him; his
appearance in Carl Dreyer's 1954 film version is indelible.
Eighty-one at the time of filming, he acted with an extraordinary
tenderness and grace, and his performance is arguably the finest in all
Dreyer's work.
