Soderbergh's rough diamond comeback, validating Clooney as a face for
film and – casually but gracefully – the best Elmore Leonard movie.
Scott Frank's screenplay doesn't force the humour and makes a major
strength of the romance between cop Lopez and robber Clooney. It's
magic at least twice, in a lustrous sex scene and a surprisingly moving
climax, both edited and scored to perfection. The rest of the time it's a
nicely under-played crime caper with a very appealing supporting cast
- like a lot of Soderbergh, enticing as much for its delicate
imperfection as its intelligence.
