Thank God for Soderbergh, the wunderkind made good. There aren't many
A-list directors now working who still make each film count on its own
merits, who have such supple grasp of formula and expectation, and who
are capable of making intellectually rigorous entertainments that
delight so subtly, on so many levels. Even if he's never matched the
incandescent frankness of his archetypal indie, sex, lies and
videotape, we've at least got him back now, after a wilderness period of
over-conceptualised, albeit challenging, art projects. His
chameleonic range and sensibility are priceless blessings to
contemporary American film.
