The first Danish sound film was directed by Carl Dreyer's former
cinematographer, and stars Dreyer actors Henrik Malberg and Karin
Nellemose. Schneevoigt lacks the master's precision, and (perhaps
due to the restrictions of early sound equipment), some of the film is
rather stagey. Nevertheless, there are some startling visual set
pieces, such as the execution sequence, and the slowly developing
tragic narrative is quite compelling. The photography, shot in subtle
silver-grey monochrome, is also extremely beautiful.
