Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix play hustlers Scott and Mike, followers
of Fat Bob, from whom they steal money to go find Mike's mother. Love
stories, a father-son conflict, and gay sex vignettes colour the road
trip. We see the world through Mike's narcoleptic eyes - the excuse for
sudden close-ups, flashbacks and dream visions. His relationship
with Scott (Reeves) was applauded for its honesty; but many eyebrows
were raised at the top-shelf scenes. Flying houses, brutal sex talk,
Shakespeare and yodelling offset by biting dialogue, original
cinematography, and Phoenix's greatest performance. I guess we're
not in Kansas any more.
