This silent classic from Danish master Carl Dreyer narrates the story
of an aging artist destroyed by his passion for his young male model. It
lacks the austerity of his later films; indeed, the images are
cluttered with objets d'art and elaborate decor. But his rigour is
still apparent in the subtlety with which that decor reflects and
counterpoints the emotions of the characters, and in the superb
performances that he draws from actors Benjamin Christiansen and
Walter Slezak. Better than Death In Venice by a long way.
