This movie does exactly what it says on the box. The fact that it does so
with beguiling charm and joy is an added bonus. The story follows
septuagenarian Alvin Straight's cross-country journey on his
lawnmower to see his ailing brother. This is a sweet tale centred on a
beautiful performance by Farnsworth as Alvin. Touching and tender,
it's still very much a Lynch film; his quirky viewpoint successfully
negotiates what could easily be nothing but sentimental pap. As it is,
it's simply wonderful.
