Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
Originally released: 1992
Lynch's darkest hour. This pitch black riff on the Twin Peaks television series destroys a TV set in the opening credits and takes most of its original audience with it. Lynch clearly enjoyed exposing the nasty, explicit final days of Laura Palmer, implementing profanity and violence that no TV show could advocate. It borders on the esoteric but also contains some of the scariest moments ever put on film. It may or may not stand alone without the series, but it's not the failure that many claimed - more like an unremittingly misanthropic slant on a pop culture phenomenon.
