Lynch's coolest film has Nicolas Cage cruising around the detritus of
the southern USA, as writ by the director's characteristically
twisted mind. Cage is Sailor Ripley, Elvis unbound; Laura Dern is Lula,
his muse and source of the violence and hatred unleashed by her
witch-like mother, Marietta (Dern's real life mother Diane Ladd).
Lynch mines the mythic archetypes of the Wizard of Oz and spins a
psychedelic road movie that oozes weirdness and pop culture irony.
