Independence Day
Originally released: 1996
Whoa what a whopper! Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin unveil their HUGE alien invasion flick with bravado and verve. So much bravado in fact that you forget it's all recycled cliche. Bill Pullman is President, Jeff Goldblum is a science boff (again) and Will Smith makes his career as a buff fighter pilot. The whole thing hangs on a jingoistic revisionist US mentality, which is almost an apology for past atrocities: sorry about previous incursions, but we'll save the world against this darn aliens. YEAH! Actually, it's all good fun if you take it in the right vein.
