Breaking The Waves
Originally released: 1996
In which Emily Watson either loses it completely, or gains the Kingdom of Heaven, depending on your point of view. She plays naïve Scottish islander Bess, who courts the disapproval of her fiercely religious, insular community when she marries an outsider (Skarsgard). Things get really bizarre when he is crippled in an accident and orders her to have sex with random strangers. Intense and disturbing, like some fly on the wall documentary gone horribly wrong, this was the moment when Von Trier first really caught the world's attention.
