Disappointing theological drama from Smith, who evidently needed to
work his Catholic upbringing out of his system. A shame he had to do it so
humourlessly, for without his trademark flourishes of wit, his
limitations as a director are cruelly exposed. The convoluted plot
only makes sense given large dollops of exposition; Linda Fiorentino
spends most of her time passively listening to it - but then, she was paid
for her patience. The proceedings only come to life when Damon and
Affleck take the screen as renegade angels trying to con their way back
to heaven. Alanis Morrisette also makes a good God, but it's not enough.
