What would you do with your last day on earth? Dying Greek poet Alexander
(Ganz, masterfully under-stated as ever) reflects on his life, helps
an Albanian refugee, and finds a new will to carry on. Serious stuff, but
its humour and humanity mean it's never morbid. It's beautifully shot,
too; Angelopoulos uses the silver screen like a painter, filling it
with atmospheric light and motion. But the technique isn't just for
show. The misty motorways, the changing blues of sea and sky, the spooky
snow-frozen Albanian border - all draw us into Alexander's world. Not
one for the impatient, this won the Palme D'Or at Cannes.
