Damon plays Mike McDermott, a man torn between his passion for poker and
his law degree, led astray by his sleazy best friend Worm (Norton). It's
a slight story, and needs something special to raise it above the
formulaic. Damon does his best, but can't do it; Norton almost does,
conveying the kind of animal energy the low-life setting demands. But
Rounders relies too heavily on a voiceover, and is ultimately a
forgettable addition to the canon of card-sharp movies. Go with House
of Games, The Cincinnati Kid, or even Lock, Stock And Two Smoking
Barrels instead.
