Gourmet had strong supporting roles in the Dardenne brothers' La
Promesse (as the father) and Rosetta (as the waffle-stand boss). He
made the most of them, but gave no hint of what he could do as a star. In
Uneasy Riders, he seizes centre stage with relish. He's so good at
playing bitter and twisted, viciously cussing out the most
defenceless victims, it's a real shock when he opens up, making the
vulnerability he shows all the more touching. Clearly an actor to be
watched.
