Having younger brothers is a pain, but it did introduce me to Elias
Koteas during a forced viewing of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The
Movie. It took two Canadians, Egoyan and Cronenberg, to put his rangy,
deranged presence to work. If anyone could have pulled off the role of
Vaughan, the mesmerising deviant at the heart of Crash, it was Koteas.
The scenes between him and Ballard (James Spader) render the film
almost watchable. He's as convincingly vulnerable in The Thin Red Line
as he is boorish in Gattaca. Too off-kilter for Hollywood, he deserves
better than playing second fiddle to heroes on the half-shell.
