Starting with a role in Godard's Hail Mary, Binoche's CV is a Who's Who of
France's premier league. Arguably though, her brand of cool reserve is
best seen in films by Central Europeans - Kieslowski's Three Colours
Blue, Haneke's Code Unknown - which might not have been made without
her. She is to French film now what Catherine Deneuve or Jeanne Moreau
used to be: a star powerful enough, and intelligent enough, to make
directors' careers. She's also found time to do Hollywood, first
photographing Lena Olin in the nude in Unbearable Lightness, more
recently picking up an Oscar for The English Patient.
