Above average romantic comedy, directed with a light touch by Anthony
Minghella - an assured Hollywood debut. Matt Dillon is unexpectedly
charming as the alimony-strapped electrician trying to find someone
to marry his ex-wife (Sciorra); Hurt seems to sleepwalk through his
role as her professor and love interest. Like Truly Madly Deeply, the
setting - a New York Italian-American community - is nicely observed.
If it lacks the emotional power of that film, it did well enough to buy
Minghella the chance to make The English Patient.
