Based on the novel by William Trevor, this charts the relationship that
develops between Felicia (Cassidy), an Irish teenager who travels to
the industrial Midlands in search of her boyfriend, and Hilditch
(Hoskins), a middle-aged man harbouring dark secrets. The best things
about it - the use of video, the fractured narrative - Egoyan has done
better before, and they're not enough to overcome the weaknesses: a
facile serial killer plot, clichéd images of Ireland and
Birmingham, and distractingly self-indulgent performances from
Hoskins and Egoyan's wife Arsinée Khanjian. Give this one a
miss and see The Sweet Hereafter instead.
