The post-Short Cuts Altman decline continues apace with this
puzzlingly thin, unappetising movie. Dr. Sullivan Travis (Gere) is
positively swimming in women, from the patients at his gynaecology
clinic to his bonkers wife (Fawcett) and a sexually ambivalent
daughter (Hudson) on the brink of ill-advised marriage. He seeks
solace at the golf-course, and with newly arrived pro Bree (Hunt,
frosty as usual). The characterisation is shockingly shallow (all the
women seem to spend their time either shopping or having their
instruments tuned). Misogynistic? Perhaps, but Gere doesn't fare
much better – he's just a dead loss in these Casanova-ish roles.
