Quirkiness isn’t an attribute usually associated with Disney, but
this escapade lays claim to it very enjoyably. Emperor Kuzco (Spade) is
turned into a llama by his scheming adviser Yzma (a cackling Kitt), but
that does nothing to lessen his enormous vanity. With the help of a
kindly peasant (Goodman) he has to navigate the treacherous route back
to his palace, bitching all the way. Flip and footloose, it’s more like
the Warner Bros cartoons than anything Disney has done before, full of
action and never burdened by any sense of its own importance.
