A total gem, Pixar’s unerringly clever and imaginative first feature
set a completely new standard for animated movies, not just in visual
terms, but for the bullseye accuracy of its wit and craft. Andy’s toys,
led by treasured cowboy Woody (Tom Hanks), react with initial
suspicion to the arrival of newcomer Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen). In
Woody’s case, the green-eyed monster takes over, unleashing a chain of
events which nearly lead to both of them suffering that fate, worse than
death for a toy, of being lost. Brilliant. Highlight: the mutant toys
next door, like Tod Browning’s Freaks reimagined by Tim Burton.
