Dreamworks’ animated division has truly come of age, no longer the
precocious upstart nipping at Disney’s heels, but – at least as they’d
like us to think – the rowdy, virile usurper of its crown. To mark the
occasion, they’ve made a movie which goes out of its way to deride the
legacy of their rival at every possible opportunity. A
fairytale-bashing fairytale starring a burping, malodorous ogre
(Myers), it’s a hugely satisfying, hilariously voiced
entertainment, astonishingly textured and polished to look at. And
it’s nearly as good as Toy Story.
