Almodovar tries again to walk the line between melodrama, out-and-out
comedy and serious drama. Abril plays the newscaster daughter of
famous actress Paredes, who returns to Madrid after leaving Abril at a
tender age to pursue her (highly camp) career abroad. In a typical
Almodóvar move, Abril is now married to Paredes'
ex-boyfriend, who is soon murdered. From the opening credits, using a
Miles Davis tune, High Heels tries just that little bit too hard to be
ultra-stylish and although still enjoyable, comes dangerously close
to falling flat on its face.
