It's summer, the early 1970s. Prom dresses, Dutch elm disease and the
smell of burning 78s fill the balmy California air. For a group of
teenage boys, that summer is all Lisbon sister - and no surprise. It
begins with 13 year old Cecilia attempting suicide. Under the command
of wayward oldest sister Lux (Dunst), pursued by school badboy
Hartnett, the others begin to break their parents' increasingly
paranoid surveillance and enter a dream world of sex, trees and rock and
roll. Coppola makes hay with the melancholy beauty of Jeffrey
Eugenides' novel; the AIR soundtrack has the taste of first love. To be
watched wearing a halter neck bikini and Chloe shades.
