Le Boucher
Originally released: 1970
Surprisingly touching portrait of a serial killer. An ex-soldier returns to his provincial hometown after years away at war, takes up butchering as a trade, and strikes up a courtship with a repressed schoolteacher. Soon, the community finds itself victim to a brutal series of murders. No prizes for guessing whodunnit; Chabrol's camera ceaselessly circles and prowls around the characters, keeping them enclosed in the frame – like their own natures, it follows them everywhere, inescapable. But in the final scenes, it shifts gears, takes off, achieves some kind of weightlessness - and against expectations, conveys a strong, unexpected sense of redemption and grace.
