High-camp, high colour and often highly outrageous, Pedro
Almodóvar's films are either loved or loathed. A leading light
of "Movida", the Madrid-based post-Franco explosion of
the arts, his sensibility generally reflects the hedonistic
lifestyles of Madrileños - drug abuse, orgies, prostitution,
and so on. Many of the films are out-and-out comedies, with jokes that
verge on the sick, and strong, sympathetic actresses (notably Carmen
Maura and Marisa Paredes), coming together most successfully in Woman
On The Verge. More recently, he seems to have hit a new maturity in the
touching and highly-praised All About My Mother, without sacrificing
his clear revelry in farcical, camp humour.
