Poor little rich girl Edna Buxton (Douglas) becomes songwriting
sensation Denise Waverly, under the manic management of Joel Millner
(Turturro), who puts her talent to chart-topping use with band the
Stylettes. Determined to find a voice of her own, Denise gets together
with fellow writer Howard (Stolz), has a baby, dumps him, gets involved
with married DJ John Murray (Davison), and finally Riptides star Jay
Phillips (Dillon). When he washes away to sea, Denise finds a voice of
heartbreaking beauty, and you realise this is a true story, of singer
Carole King, and of music's part in the American dream.
