Two things happened in 1966: Dylan went electric, and Godard went
political. Their decisions proved equally divisive. Bertolucci, in
some ways a Donovan to Godard's Dylan, momentarily lost direction. His
populist instincts led him to help Sergio Leone write Once Upon A Time In
The West. His arty persona led him to collaboration with the
Artaud-influenced Living Theatre group, and this film is the
bewildering result. Best looked at as a Cocteau-ish experiment,
Partner is a re-rewind of Before The Revolution, but with the 'crazy
camera stunts' dial on eleven. It's not very good, but its resemblance
to Fight Club is spooky.
