Gas Food Lodging
Originally released: 1991
Totally under-rated drama set on the Mexican border. Balk and Skye live with their mother in a trailer park, Balk living for Mexican melodramas, and on memories of her father. Skye's a more people person, mainly quarterbacks, until one hot night with a gorgeous geologist. While she pines for him, Balk falls for Leitch, and attempts an ill-advised seduction. Mom finds love with a satellite installer. This is one of those love/hate films, a slacker Lone Star with an original soundtrack by Dinosaur Jr and Nick Cave. Balk does lonely, gawky adolescent with intense, dreamy power.
