The Worst Witch
Originally released: 1986
When Harry Potter was just a twinkle in his mother's eye, Mildred Hubble, aka The Worst Witch, turned a generation of schoolgirls onto the possibilities of magic. This feature-length adaptation of Jill Murphy's first book, complete with songs and special effects, follows Mildred (Balk) in her attempt to survive under the witch-tuition of Miss Hardbroom (Rigg). She makes her best friend Maud disappear, turns her arch-enemy Ethel into a pig, wrecks the Hallowe'en flying display in front of the Grand Wizard (Curry), and eventually saves the day. Even then, Fairuza was in DMs. Growing up isn't easy... and who'd want to?
