American History X
Originally released: 1998
Pointlessly controversial movie about neo-Nazis in America. The mind-bendingly simplistic explanations for the increase in neo-Nazi groups – economic depression, ethnic shop-owners, drugs, and (my favourite) because dad didn't like black people – bloat this dialogue-burdened movie. The only interruption to the monologues are the punching, stamping, kicking, shooting pastimes of the characters and the Baywatch-style sunset shots. Prison looks like a Calvin Klein ad for sodomy, and the flashback structure utterly undoes the impact of the film's final minutes. Norton is scarily convincing, but it's a wasted effort. South Park explains these things better.
