The director returned to his Armenian roots with this low-budget,
intellectually heavyweight meditation on identity. Egoyan himself
plays the protagonist - a Canadian photographer returning to his
Armenian roots - while his real-life wife, Arsinée Khanjian,
plays his partner. Egoyan uses video images within the film to convey a
fractured sense of time, showing how past and present bleed into each
other, giving Calendar a powerful emotional punch.
