The first master of the Scandinavian cinema, along with Mauritz
Stiller, Swedish director Sjöström worked initially in
his native country, crafting a series of subtle melodramas which
featured excellent performances and made precise use of landscape and
natural light. His most famous Scandinavian film, the haunting fable
The Phantom Carriage, earned him an invitation to Hollywood. Most of
his American films are lost, but The Wind, at least, is a classic of the
silent cinema, and contains one of Lillian Gish's finest
performances. With the coming of sound, Sjöström returned
to Sweden, where he worked mainly as an actor; his performance in
Bergman's Wild Strawberries is magnificent.
