A TV game show where ordinary people are given guns and told to kill each
other, whether they want to or not. That's the premise of Series 7, a
satire which presents itself as a genuine show. Nice idea; trouble is,
it falls prey to the format's problems - boring bits where nothing
happens, dull people being dull - without the genuinely spontaneous,
voyeuristic thrills such programmes occasionally provide. It does
raise issues, but nothing we haven't seen already in The Truman Show or
Rollerball, and don't already know (Surprise! Reality TV is crass!
shallow! exploitative!). There are funny bits, sure, but - fatally for
a satire - not nearly enough.
