Mike Hodges is best known for iconic British gangster thriller Get
Carter, his first outing as a director after an early career in
television. Remembered by the Star Wars generation for his camp Flash
Gordon, Hodges is a well-respected if unprolific purveyor of quality
cinema with an art-house slant: his Croupier is currently enjoying a
rare second chance in British cinemas after success in the US. His
talent lies in ambiguous, often duplicitous shadow figures, lent
further depth by his elliptical editing and dour direction. His
stature seems to depend on how you regard Get Carter: for me, a workaday
director with arty ambitions.
