Egoyan's international breakthrough film probed the gap between
appearance and reality to disturbing effect. Elias Koteas plays an
insurance loss adjuster encountering emotional paralysis and
material malaise both around and within himself. Beautifully shot,
this haunting allegory has the austere, distanced feel of Robert
Bresson's later films.
