Since the 1980s, Canadian-Armenian director Egoyan has crafted a
highly distinctive body of work. He's the maker of cool, elliptical
art-house gems like The Adjuster, Exotica and The Sweet Hereafter. The
kind of movies that win critics' prizes at Cannes, they're suffused
with his trademark obsessions: voyeurism, sexual dysfunction,
cultural displacement. One of the pioneers of mixed media in cinema,
Egoyan often uses video footage, exploiting new technologies'
connotations of surveillance and control. Recently, he has reached
for a wider audience, with mixed results - The Sweet Hereafter was
haunting, but Felicia's Journey felt facile and derivative. He
remains a talent worth watching.
