Gorgeous version of Daphne du Maurier's spooky yarn, drenched in
ominous cobwebs and gliding lesbian housekeepers. Joan Fontaine is
flutteringly convincing as the new wife of brooding repressive
Laurence Olivier, a man haunted by the pervasive shadow of his first
wife and some terrible, juicy secrets. Ends about half an hour after it
should, but a great, deceptive kick-off for the collaboration between
Hitchcock and American producer David O Selznick.
