The Lodger
Originally released: 1926
A tasty slice of silent ham that deserves its reputation at the first true Hitch flick. Apparently inspired by Jack the Ripper, an angsty lodger (Ivor Novello, so pale he could be iced), rents a room in the midst of the nasty 'Avenger' killings, bringing just a gun, a mysterious bag, and some serious eyeliner. Daughter of the house Daisy finds herself spurning irritating copper fiancé Joe in favour of a bit of a challenge. Hard going at nearly two hours, but worth it just for the density of spot-the-rip-off moments.
