Peter Mullan is a revelation – energetic, tough and very funny – as the
eponymous recovering alcoholic, who runs a shambolic football team in
Glasgow, but is embroiled with ruthless drug dealers to bale out his
incompetent friend Liam (McKay). He also embarks on a relationship
with social worker Sarah (Goodall), which is played with the sort of
touching realism that puts conventional romantic comedy to shame.
This is a thoroughly accomplished and surprisingly entertaining
piece on typical Loach territory, though the denouement is perhaps a
notch too hysterical.
