On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Originally released: 1969
Okay. George Lazenby wasn’t a great Bond. True, but he certainly wasn’t bad and he happened to occupy those ample shoes for one of the best in the series. This is a tighter adventure than recent efforts, with Lazenby sent to infiltrate a mountain brainwashing facility owned by Blofeld. Telly Savalas is an interestingly benign Blofeld, while Diana Rigg proves an ample foil as Bond’s future wife. John Barry outdoes himself with a new theme for George that has gone down as a classic, and Louis Armstrong croons the sentiment. Ski chases are the piece de resistance and they are superbly exhilarating, giving OHMSS a real edge.
