A farcical game of cat and mouse, as Brosnan’s spy-gone-bad pursues
vital information on the Panama Canal from Rush’s bullshitting
tailor. Boorman’s attempts to subvert Brosnan’s James Bond persona
don’t quite work; the actor’s wry charm and host of double entendres
smack far too much of 007. Rush’s tailor is entertainingly camp and
terribly feeble, as he is humbled by the danger his story-telling gets
him into. A blend of Boorman’s dark side and love of fantasy, the film
can’t really decide what it wants to be, floating limply between
thriller and farce and not really succeeding as either.
