The Terminator
Originally released: 1984
Seminal 1980s science-action that remains Cameron's most influential work, informing everything of its ilk from RoboCop to The Matrix. Arnold Schwarzenegger is the killer cyborg from the future sent to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), who will birth humanity's future, robot-beating saviour. Only human Kyle Reese (a sensitive Michael Biehn) is sent to protect her. The cyberpunk action is relentless and the mood bleak in its tech noir gloom, but Cameron weaves his sci-fi fable with such aplomb and visceral kineticism that you are left breathless. Arnie has never been so effective. So grungy it almost feels like a guilty pleasure.
