A splendid translation of Rick Moody's 1970s-set novel about rites of
passage – both adolescent and adult – in a small Connecticut town. Kline
is bored with his frigid wife (Allen), and his mistress (Weaver) is
beginning to get bored with him too. Their children still have things to
be curious about, but over the course of one freezing night there will be
a price to pay for all of this. Probably Ang Lee's finest
English-language film, it's as delicate, subtle, and ambiguous as
American Beauty was obvious and packaged.
